According to the Outline of urban Water Industry Development Plan in 2035, the water industry will focus on five major business fields: drinking water safety guarantee, water environment management of "factory network rivers and lakes", urban drainage and waterlogging prevention, resource conservation and green circulation, and digitalization of water industry.  Traditional water enterprises need to shift from extensive development to refinement, and environmental water enterprises also need to create low-carbon and energy-saving solutions for users through intelligent upgrading.  

It is widely believed in the industry that traditional water has been faced with problems such as labor intensive, low resource utilization rate and extensive operation management. The extension and development of smart water concept is not only a challenge, but also an opportunity.  Based on the smart water reform, the traditional water industry is expected to build a new multi-technology support system, greatly improve the operation, peacekeeping management and protection efficiency through comprehensive perception, data sharing, intelligence control and pre-analysis, and strengthen emergency response capacity.

At present, there are typical success cases abroad, such as Suez Group, the introduction of OPTIMIZERTM digital technology.  There is no lack of such examples in China. For example, Chongqing Water Group has cooperated with Alibaba Group to build a smart water big data center.  Shenzhen Water Group, completed shenzhen Yantian direct drinking water demonstration project and so on. 

In terms of core technologies, the global sweep of the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and big data is constantly impacting the existing structure of the water industry and breaking many technical barriers at one fell swoop.  China is now strongly supporting new infrastructure, promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction projects, and promoting digital transformation, as outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development and the 2035 Vision.
